Orientation on Regency: A Day of Reflection and Preparation for Jesuit Scholastics

23 April 2026

Fr. Olvin Veigas SJ, faculty member in Business Management at St. Joseph’s College, Hassan, conducted a day-long orientation session for Jesuit scholastics as part of the Pre-Regency Programme held at Ashirvad, Bangalore. The session was centered on the Letters of Fr. Kolvenbach on Regency, offering valuable insights into the meaning and purpose of this formative stage in Jesuit life.

A total of 27 young Jesuits, preparing to embark on their regency—a period of study combined with practical work experience in Jesuit ministries—participated in the programme. The scholastics represented various Jesuit provinces, including Karnataka, Kerala, Madurai, Chennai, and Andhra.

The orientation provided a reflective space to understand regency not merely as a phase of activity, but as a time of deep personal growth, apostolic commitment, and discernment. Drawing from Fr. Kolvenbach’s letters, Fr. Veigas highlighted the importance of integrating academic learning with lived experience, fostering responsibility, adaptability, and a spirit of service.

The interactive sessions encouraged participants to engage meaningfully with the expectations and challenges of regency, preparing them to contribute effectively to Jesuit works while deepening their vocation. The event took place on 13 April 2026.
